It has often been said that the hardest thing to do for the
Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition was to come up with
an idea, and believe me it is. However after much thought we
finally decided that our project would investigate the advantages
and disadvantages of Organophosphates.
Organophosphates are toxic substances which are commonly
used in pesticides such as sheep dips. These substances have
been widely available since the 1970's but in past years it
has come to the attention of many that organophosphates can
cause damage to the user and all those who come into contact
with it.
In our project, we hope to find out more about organophosphates
- what they're composed of, how do they work and is there
any substitute?
We have contacted many people enquiring about any information
that they could provide us with and they were all very helpful.
Mr. Andrew Eadie who owns a woollen mill in Co. Kerry provided
us with samples of wool, one which had been dipped in a substance
containing organophosphates, another which had not. We hope
to carry out tests on these samples to see if there is any
difference in the two. Organisations such as Teagasc, Animal
Health Ireland and the Animal & Plant Health Association
provided us with some very useful information.
The exhibition is due to be held between the 7th and 10th
of January 1999 in the RDS, Dublin. All projects will be displayed
and judged between these dates and the exhibition will also
be open to the public. We are really looking forward to it
and hopefully we'll get on well. |
