OBJECTIVES
The objective of our project was to measure the level of awareness among our peers to the existence and potential hazards of Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant. In addition, for those who were not aware of its existence or geographical location in close proximity to the Irish coast we attempted to heighten awareness amongst our fellow pupils to Sellafield and its activities. The focus of our project was nuclear energy, radiation and its effects with a main focus on Sellafield.

METHOD
The methodology we used was to conduct an objective survey consisting of five clear questions requiring a definite yes/no answer. We surveyed 100 people in the 12-14 age category. We analyzed the results of our survey and presented them graphically. This survey formed part of the case study on Sellafield nuclear power plant.

To obtain background information we wrote away to numerous environmental and ecological organizations and requested relevant information. Using this information we endeavored to inform our peers about Sellafield and the potential dangers of nuclear energy.

CONCLUSION
The findings of our survey revealed a high level of awareness among our fellow students towards the existence of Sellafield (91%) and its potential hazards (90%). However it was alarming to discover that only 75% of those surveyed knew where it was located. This is particularly upsetting given the short distance between Sellafield and the Irish coast (132km's approx.) and the detrimental effect a nuclear accident would have on the Irish people's health and environment. It is for this reason that we wished to highlight these issues in our project and as 90% see Sellafield as potentially dangerous, we feel that future government policy should reflect these concerns.
