As part of the SPHE programme the Claddagh group was formed
in 2003. This group comprises 25 fifth year students who each
year volunteer to take on the onerous task of befriending
incoming first years and ensuring that their transition from
primary to secondary school is as stress free as possible.
The Claddagh group undergo a training programme at the end
of their transition year to equip them with the skills necessary
to deal with problems which may arise. The Claddagh girls
give up their free time to organize activities such as Table
Quizzes, Speed Chatting, Lunchtime Activities, Treasure Hunts,
Sports Afternoons etc. for first year students. The name Claddagh
was chosen by the girls as it denotes "friendship"
and "companionship".
